In 2015, Nina Dobrev announced that she will be leaving the series after season six. She confirmed this news herself promising that she will come back as a guest appearance in the series finale while also voice overing the last episode of season seven. The show was renewed for another season which was also announced to be the last. It aired from October 2016 to March 2017. Fans were confused as to why Dobrev wanted to cut short the contract and leave the series as soon as possible. Even though the management tried to convince her to stay for two more seasons, Dobrev refused.
Her Reason To Leave
In an instagram post she wrote farewell to the show saying I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six-season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. Later in an interview she revealed her fear of unemployment led her to make that decision. She was scared that she would never land a job after The Vampire Diaries ended. If anything, the fact that leaving terrified me drove me even more. I needed to feel that fear of, Oh, my God, what if I never get a job again? That just made me want to work five times as hard to make sure that didn't happen, she told Harper's Bazaar.
Her Awkward Relationship Drama
Nina disclosed on an episode of Jessica Szohr’s XOXO podcast that she and her boyfriend at that time both auditioned for the respective roles of Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore. But only she ended up getting the role and he didn't, so things got awkward. After a little while when she landed the role, their relationship itself came to an abrupt end. As we all know, then Ian Somerhalder was casted for the portrayal of Damon Salvatore’s character.

Ian and Nina Dating History
They both dated from 2010 to 2013, but ended their relationship on a friendly note still being friends and continued to play love interests on screen. I don’t think that’s weird at all, the Bulgarian actress said in regards to her post-romantic relationship with Ian who is married to Nikki Reed, during a January 2019 episode of Watch What Happens Live. I think that he and Reed have a beautiful baby daughter, Bohdi, and they are happy and so am I. What’s bad about that? Dobrev expressed that it's normal to end a relationship on a friendly note and it's okay to still be friends with your ex partner.
Nina And Paul’s Work Dynamic
Dobrev also revealed that her and Pual’s characters were in love in the start of the plotline but they themselves off-set didn't get along at all during the first five months of filming. I respected Paul Wesley; I didn't like Paul Wesley, she admitted on the Directionally Challenged podcast back in 2019 I remember everyone would walk up to me after the show aired and they'd be like, 'Are you and Paul dating in real life?' because everyone thought that we had such good chemistry. I realise now that there's a fine line between love and hate and we despised each other so much that it read as love. the actress chuckled, explaining that Paul is now one of her best friends. We're probably the closest, like, we hang out a lot and we're really good friends and I love his wife. It's so funny how much has changed. she said.
