Sotheby's reports that Princess Diana wore the sweater in 1981 to a polo match with Prince Charles. In the same year, a letter was sent from Buckingham Palace to Warm and Wonderful, a British luxury knitwear brand, politely explaining that the jumper had been damaged and requesting either a repair or replacement.

Sotheby's had estimated the sweater's value to be between $50,000 and $80,000. However, the identity of the winning bidder was not disclosed.
