Before this, the VMAs bestowed upon Diddy the Global Icon Award, a distinction surpassing the Video Vanguard Award. The award was presented by his daughter, Chance Combs, and he accepted it with a lively medley of his hits, accompanied by several special guest appearances, including his son, King Combs, who appeared to be thoroughly enjoying himself.

This was his first performance at the show since 2015, and it spanned numerous eras throughout his career, rendering it a supplementary hip-hop tribute preceding the primary celebration.
The event was held until the night's end and featured prominent artists such as Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Grandmaster Flash, And The Furious Five, LL Cool J, and Doug E. Fresh, some of whom had previously performed during the show.

The antiquated melodies were notably remarkable.
Including a tribute to Diddy added to the event's overall atmosphere, which felt like a celebration of hip-hop, albeit not solely focused on Taylor Swift. The performances were seamlessly transitioned, with Doug E. Fresh followed by Nicki Minaj and a brief interlude before Lil Wayne's rendition of "A Milli."
LL Cool J's appearance was preceded by a brief introduction to excite his arrival, and his performance of "Mama Said Knock You Out" was a highlight of the night. DMC's performance of his old songs was particularly impressive, surpassing LL Cool J's, which is understandable given time.
