With superheroes exploring dimensions fans have held onto hope that Tony Stark (played by RDJ) Black Widow ( Scarlett Johansson) and Captain America (Chris Evans) might return for another epic showdown. Initially there were rumors that these fallen heroes would be resurrected in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. Now it seems like they might make their comeback in Avengers; Secret Wars which is set to release on May 1, 2026.
Here are three upcoming movies in the Marvel Universe that could potentially bring back Robert Downey Jr.s character, Tony Stark aka Iron Man.
Iron Man played a role as the hero to kickstart the MCU back in 2008. Since his story came to an end with his sacrifice in Avengers; Endgame fans have been constantly speculating about how this beloved hero could return.
1. Armor Wars
Don Cheadle's War Machine will take stage in his solo movie called Armor Wars. This film will pay tribute to the legacy of Robert Downey Jr.s Iron Man by exploring a story where advanced Stark technology falls into the hands and Rhodey is tasked with retrieving it. The spin off of Iron Man was initially planned as a series for Disney+. It was later changed to a movie, which has led to speculation that this change was made to accommodate Downey Jr.s return. Since Armor Wars is not expected to involve the Multiverse or time travel it's unlikely that Iron Man will make an appearance in this story.
However it's possible that he could still make an appearance, as a voice or through a flashback.
Nevertheless Marvel Studios will likely want to create a moment for Iron Man's comeback, similar to what was done with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Given these circumstances these options seem unlikely.
2. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
The Multiverse Saga has made Variants and alternate universes the focus and all of this will culminate with Avengers; The Kang Dynasty. Therefore even though Earth 616s Tony Stark is no longer alive the crossover event provides an opportunity to introduce a Variant of Robert Downey Jr.s character.
However it seems improbable that Tony Stark will join Avengers 5 since the studio might want the founding Avenger to take a break from blockbusters before returning. This approach allows The Kang Dynasty to concentrate on uniting heroes before Secret Wars brings back faces.
Yet if Downey Jr. Were to play a role in Secret Wars it's plausible that he could appear in a credits scene in The Kang Dynasty. This cameo would confirm his return. Build anticipation among fans, for what lies one year later.
3. Avengers: Secret Wars
It's highly probable that Robert Downey Jr.s Iron Man will make a comeback, in 2027s Avengers; Secret Wars, which marks the culmination of the Multiverse Saga. By then eight years and one Avengers movie would have gone by since his appearance making his return feel well deserved and fitting.
