In each episode Jamie and Adam, two special effects experts, with over 30 years of expertise take on the challenge of systematically investigating three urban legends. Their goal is to test these myths to determine what is real. What is simply an urban myth.
The concept for the series originally arose as "Tall Tales or True" by writer and producer Peter Rees of Beyond Productions in 2002. Initially Discovery Channel rejected the proposal due to their commissioning of a topic based series. However Rees refined his pitch by focusing on testing the elements of the stories rather than just retelling them. Eventually Discovery agreed to collaborate with Rees in developing a three episode pilot for the show.
Jamie Hyneman was among special effects artists who were asked to create casting videos for network consideration during this process. Enough Rees had previously interviewed him for a segment in "Beyond 2000 " a science series that covered topics, like Robot Wars—a British American robot combat television series.
