Isabel May and LaMonica Garrett have joined Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill in the Yellowstone prequel. Scroll down for an introduction to the characters we know we’ll be meeting as Sheridan unfurls the origin story of the Duttons, who control the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States on the original Paramount Network hit.  In 1883, the family embarks on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America.  The series is a stark retelling of Western expansion and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in the promised land — Montana. “While we’ve worked with Taylor on numerous projects, the production of 1883 is like nothing we’ve done before,” David Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios, said in a statement.  “The scale and scope of our production and set is one of the most ambitious projects both 101 Studios and Paramount+ has ever undertaken.” Given the chaotic nature of his entrance, we don’t get a lot of information about this enigmatic savior. When Shea asks Charles what he’s doing out in the barren Plains, Charles replies, “Hunting bandits and strays.”  With military training and weapon expertise, Charles is more than equipped to handle himself in these unpredictable and dangerous times. But is Charles a lawman or a vigilante?  The answer is unclear, but he does tell Shea that “killing cattle thieves is one of the West’s five great pleasures.” Does that sound like someone associated with the law or someone with a score to settle? The viewer can decide.

Though Charles kills the cattle thieves without question, it’s clear he has a code of morals. As the group surveys the bodies of the bandits on the ground, Charles asks Shea: “Don’t suppose you care to bury these folks?”  When Shea replies in the negative, Charles opines: “they may not deserve it, but someone should say a prayer over these sorry sons of bitches. I doubt you care to hear it.” Before Shea, Thomas and James ride back to the wagon party, Charles says he’ll meet them there. Could Charles Goodnight ride with our pioneers for a bit? They sure could use him.

Donning a thick brown bread and a large cowboy hat, Charles Goodnight is played by none other than 1883 creator/writer/director Taylor Sheridan.  Previously, fans have seen him in his own universe on Yellowstone as Travis Wheatley, John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) trusted horseman who also serves as another mentor for the wayward Jimmy (Jefferson White). Though he is more well known for creating 1883, Yellowstone, and Mayor of Kingstown and for writing the screenplays for arthouse hits like Sicario and Hell or High Water, Sheridan is also an actor. Before focusing on his work behind the camera, Sheridan had showy supporting roles in Sons of Anarchy as Deputy Chief David Hale and in Veronica Mars as Danny Boyd
