While she became widely known for her portrayal of Lara Croft in the 2000s Jolies exceptional performances span from the 90s to the 2010s. Joining the ranks of actors nowadays Jolie possesses a threat ability as an actress, producer and director in feature films.

Her initial directorial work was a documentary shedding light on orphanages and refugee camps with the aim of raising awareness and promoting understanding. This thought provoking film titled "A Place in Time" premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2007. While it has been some time since Jolie directed a film she has a project that will showcase her directing skills alongside her Eternals co-star Selma Hayek; it is called "Without Blood."

The movie called A Place in Time had its premiere at the Tribeca Festival in 2007. Following that she took on the role of director for a war romance film titled In the Land of Blood and Honey. Unbroken, which was released in 2014 is her known work to date. Another war film based on true events. By the Sea released in 2015 was a film where she directed and starred alongside her ex husband Brad Pitt. First They Killed My Father, her directorial project, debuted in 2017 and is another war biopic.

As reported by Variety a new film will be produced through a partnership with Fremantle. A company she signed a agreement with for three years back in March 2022. The Hollywood Reporter has mentioned that Demián Bichir will also star in Without Blood, which is based on the novel of the name written by Alessandro Baricco. Since its still stages of development fans will have to wait some time before it hits theaters. One notable film from 2011 is "In the Land of Blood and Honey " which intertwines war and romance against the backdrop of the Bosnian War. The story follows Danijel, a soldier and Ajla a Bosnian captive. They had an encounter before the war, at a nightclub. Now that they find themselves on opposite sides. One, as captor and the other as captured. Can their recently reignited love endure?. More crucially can they rely on each other?

The film, in question, directed, written and produced by Jolie herself unfortunately did not meet the expectations of viewers. Many felt that it failed to captivate them and lacked engagement. Although the battle scenes were realistic without being excessive, the connection between the two protagonists and the overarching war theme did not leave an impression. It appears that Jolie took note of these shortcomings and successfully addressed them in her films.

By The Sea

By the Sea is one of Jolies projects that deviates from war related themes. In this film she takes on roles as director, lead actor, sole screenwriter and producer. It also marks her collaboration with Pitt but their first under Jolies direction.

The story revolves around a couple during the era of the 1970s. Their marriage is. Tensions escalate during their stay at a hotel in France. Pitt portrays a husband grappling with writer's block while Jolie depicts a wife who becomes fixated on their neighbor in a room. Critics lauded Jolies portrayal of marriage dynamics after 14 years. Noted that her writing skills fell short of unlocking its potential.

First They Killed My Father is a war movie that draws inspiration from the life and experiences of Loung Ung, an author and advocate for human rights. The film, released in 2017 depicts Ungs recollection of her life during the era of the Khmer Rouge regime, in Cambodia during the 1970s. As the Khmer Rouge forces invaded Cambodia, Lounge world was turned down as her family was compelled to abandon their comfortable existence for a challenging life in work camps. Adding to their hardships, her father, an officer, tragically lost his life forcing the struggling family to separate in order to survive.

Collaborating closely with Loung Ung herself, Jolie worked on developing the screenplay for this Netflix produced biopic. They utilized material from the life and experiences of Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung  of the title as a foundation for crafting their narrative. Notably this film received recognition with a nomination for Best Film Not in the English Language at the BAFTA Film Awards.

Unbroken stands as one of Jolie's directorial works delving into the true story of Louis Zamperini. Zamperini transitioned from being an athlete to serving as a soldier during World War II. Following his plane crash and subsequent survival at sea on a raft for 47 days he was unfortunate enough to be captured by military forces. The film chronicles Zamperini's years leading up to his participation in the 1936 Olympics and then delves into his life marked by immense suffering and torment endured within Japanese prisoner of war camps. The movie, from 2014 received three Oscar nominations, one of which was for Best Achievement, in Cinematography. It tells a story that showcases Zamperini's determination and indomitable spirit. Jack O'Connell played the role of Zamperini. Received award nominations for his outstanding performance.
