The actress revealed her secret

The actress took a three-year gap after the incident and for the first time after disappearing from social media, she took the courage to reveal what actually happened to her during her break. Constance Wu revealed that she had attempted suicide due to the backlash she faced all by herself.

She shared a social media post where she shared, “I was afraid of coming back on social media because I almost lost my life from it: three years ago when I made careless tweets about the renewal of my TV show, it ignited outrage and internet shaming that got pretty severe.”

“I felt awful about what I’d said, and when a few DMs from a fellow Asian actress told me I’d become a blight on the Asian American community, I started feeling like I didn’t even deserve to live anymore. That I was a disgrace to AsAms [Asian Americans], and they’d be better off without me.”

“Looking back, it’s surreal that a few DMs convinced me to end my own life, but that’s what happened. Luckily, a friend found me and rushed me to the ER.”

What happened back then?

Back in 2019, when the news was revealed about the TV show Fresh Off the Boat’s renewal, fans were shocked by the outburst of Wu. She tweeted, So upset right now that I’m literally crying. Ugh. F—.  She also posted another tweet that read, F—— hell.

The next day she clarified her comments to the media saying, I love FOTB. I was temporarily upset yesterday not because I hate the show but because its renewal meant I had to give up another project that I was really passionate about. So, my dismayed social media replies were more about that other project and not about FOTB.

Wu also wrote praises for the show saying, FOTB is a great show that I’m proud of and that I enjoy.  She also admitted that her previous comments were insensitive, and she realised how wrong she was at that time.

I do regret that, and it wasn’t nice, and I am sorry for that. I know it’s a huge privilege that I even HAVE options — options that FOTB has afforded me, she wrote.

People can hold conflicting feelings in their hearts — that conflict is a part of being human. So I can both love the show/cast/crew but at the same time be disappointed that I lost that other unrelated job.

After this controversy, the actress decided to focus on her mental health and put aside her career. She also revealed how AsAms doesn’t talk about mental health enough and avoids discussing uncomfortable issues at all costs. She explained, "Even my tweets became a subject so touchy that most of my AsAm colleagues decided that was the time to avoid me or ice me out. I'll admit it hurt a lot, but it also made me realise how important it is to reach out and care for people who are going through a hard time."
