Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, known as Tom Cruise, was an award-winning American actor and filmmaker, who was best known for his portrayals of secret agent Ethan Hunt movies in the Mission: Impossible film series. He was considered to be one of the biggest movie stars in the United States and was Hollywood's highest-paid actor in 2012.  Born in Syracuse, New York to Mary Lee and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, as a teenager he dreamed of becoming a priest, not an actor. However, he realized that acting came naturally to him and decided to seriously pursue acting as a career. Over the next few years he appeared in a lot of supporting roles before bagging his first major role in the romantic comedy, titled Risky Business. Strikingly handsome and blessed with boyish charms, it did not take him long to take Hollywood by storm and soon he established himself as a much sought after A-list star.

Tom Cruise had a difficult childhood and grew up in near-poverty. His father was an abusive man who often used to beat him at the slightest pretext. His family moved to Canada when his father got a job with the Canadian Armed Forces. However, his parents broke up within a few years and Tom Cruise returned to the U.S. with his mother and sisters. He married actress Mimi Rogers in May 1987, while she introduced him to Scientology and he went on to become an outspoken advocate for the Church of Scientology. Their marriage, however, ended in February 1990. In December 1990, he got married to actress Nicole Kidman and adopted two children, but this marriage too ended in divorce. In November 2006, he got married for the third time to Katie Holmes and they have a daughter together. After five and half years of marriage, Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise in June 2012.

Tom Cruise married Mimi Rogers in May 1987, one year after their first meeting, but they have told different stories about how they were introduced. Mimi Rogers claimed they met through mutual friends who set them up when they were both single, while Tom Cruise has said that Mimi Rogers was in a relationship when he met her. Shortly before their 1990 split, according to Rolling Stone, Tom Cruise said that he has never been in love before and since he has been with Mimi Rogers, it has opened him up a lot, and helped him be a better actor.

Mimi Rogers, a second generation member of Church of Scientology, was likely one of the first people who introduced Tom Cruise to the controversial religion. Despite their shared interest in the church, the pair announced their split in early 1990. In a joint statement at the time, Mimi Rogers said that while there have been positive aspects to their marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time.

Mimi Rogers was 33 years old when Tom Cruise filed for divorce. Mimi Rogers was often reported to be the reason Tom Cruise first joined the Church of Scientology. It was unclear why they split but Mimi Rogers did tell People in 1995 that Tom Cruise’s success put strain on their relationship. Though Holmes, that was 33 when she reportedly blindsided Tom Cruise by filing for divorce. A divorce that was rapidly finalized in just 11 days allegedly due to Holmes’ fears about getting her daughter out of Scientology.
