The NBC workplace comedy, The Office, has been reimagined as a science fiction series, and the result is disconcerting, albeit not for the reasons one might anticipate. The show's enduring popularity and contribution to the workplace comedy genre are attributed to its exceptional episodic storytelling, allowing for a specific focus on individual stories.

While The Office could have explored a different thematic focus, certain elements remained constant. For instance, Dwight Schrute's love for science fiction was evident throughout the series, as he dressed up as a Sith Lord in the Halloween episode of season 2, showcasing a costume that he was particularly proud of. A shared post on the Midjourney subreddit showcases images and videos generated by artificial intelligence. It eliminates all familiar aspects of the sitcom while retaining The Office's cast of characters in a fusion of science fiction tropes.

The reimagining, originally conceived by Afraid2Sleep, envisions extraterrestrial beings infiltrating the show's workplace environment, with the most bizarre and unsettling aspect being the uncanny and peculiar appearance of all the character substitutes. The science fiction adaptation of The Office indicates the show's impact.

Even for those who have only viewed a few episodes, its style and core ensemble are easily identifiable, rendering the eerie science fiction parody effective. Given this impact and the prevalence of reboots and revivals, it is surprising that there has yet to be much progress in reintroducing characters such as Dwight and Michael Scott.

NBC executives have discussed the possibility of a reboot of The Office and those closely involved with the show. The series creator, Greg Daniels, has previously expressed scepticism about the sitcom's return, although he has also shown some interest in the idea.

Daniels has even provided some insight into how he would approach a reboot. Cast members, such as John Krasinski and Mindy Kaling, have also indicated their willingness to revisit their iconic roles under the right circumstances. However, B.J. Novak, a writer, producer, director, and actor on the show, has been forthright about his reservations regarding a revival of The Office.

Novak has stated that the opportunity to reunite the core cast has passed. Any reboot must be approached as an artistic endeavour rather than a financial incentive. Despite this, the Office fandom remains active, as evidenced by the existence of fan art that would make Dwight Schrute proud.
